Decathlon improve accessibility with Gilgen

One of Europe’s largest sports retailers, Decathlon, has chosen Gilgen automatic doors to improve accessibility, safety and pedestrian flow at several of its UK stores.

Gilgen automatic sliding doors are the natural choice for stores with high footfall areas as they offer easy, contact free access for visitors and help improve safety, convenience and pedestrian flow at each entrance and exit.

Decathlon UK was launched in 1999 and through rapid expansion today has 32 stores nationwide with others in the pipeline. Its founding mission is to make sport accessible to as many people as possible; this philosophy also extending to the accessibility of its stores and care of customers.

Gilgen SLX automatic doors were recently installed at Decathlon stores in Sheffield and Giltbrook, near Notttingham.  Gilgen Door Systems offers a range of door profiles to match with the external facade of buildings. Two single sliding doors specified with the slender Gilgen PSX profile were chosen for the Sheffield store where as bi-parting doors with the frameless Gilgen PSF profile were preferred for the Giltbrook store. In both cases a site survey was completed in order to determine the specification best suited to the functional, design and safety needs of each site.

Reliability was a key factor in the decision as Pedro Minarro, UK Facilities Manager at Decathlon explains “One of the reasons we chose Gilgen was the high quality Swiss design of their systems which have proven to be reliable at our Lakeside store and in similar intensive applications. We were also pleased with the level of service provided by the Gilgen team.”

Although of low profile appearance the Gilgen drive system and door profiles are strong and test proven for over 1 million operations. All Gilgen automatic doors are installed to BS EN16005 standards and come with a range of integrated safety measures which minimise any risk of accidental contact with the door.

The clean lines of the Gilgen automatic doors, which have a clear opening width of 1.3m, combined with the smooth near-silent operation of its drive systems provide easy and convenient entry to Decathlon stores for customers no matter their age or physical ability; thus helping the company to meet its original goal of bringing sport to as many people as possible.

Gilgen Door Systems have subsequently been appointed as the national service provider for automatic doors across Decathlon stores nationwide. Through its national service team of 80 professional engineers Gilgen will provide regular servicing to ensure the doors remain safe and reliable for years to come.
